News & Stories

Helping people is something that comes naturally to Gabby.

Whether she’s folding and labelling items in the Hub office or cooking up a storm at the social club BBQ, Gabby is always happy to lend a helping hand.

Gabby first joined HELP in 2020 and quickly won the hearts of the HELP team (and her fellow participants) with her kind and bubbly personality.

“Gabby always puts a smile on people’s faces and is the first to ask how you are. It’s a joy to support Gabby in achieving her goals as she is so happy, positive, and communicative”, said Sunnybank Hub Team Leader Allirra.

Achieving goals

During the week Gabby attends our Sunnybank Hub, and has recently started work experience at HELP’s Acacia Ridge site to work towards her goal of paid employment. With the help of her support worker, Gabby has been able to build friendships with her teammates, enjoy her newfound independence, and learn skills like packing, processing, and pre-filling food products into their packaging so they are ready to be weighed and sealed.

“Working at Acacia Ridge has become the highlight of Gabby’s day”, said Gabby’s parents Karine and Peer.

Fitness is also an important part of Gabby’s journey with HELP. Together with her support worker Mamou, Gabby attends the gym twice a week and does a range of exercises including running, cardio, and weights in order to reach her fitness goals.

But it’s not all work and no play.

Gabby never says no to a good party! In fact, she loves to help out and get dressed up for Hub events like Halloween and Christmas in July. Fridays are also an opportunity for Gabby to take a break from her busy schedule to get out and explore her local community through the Hub social group. Each week the group explores a new and exciting activity, visiting places like the Ipswich Art Gallery or a yummy local cafe.

What’s next for Gabby?

Over the past 18 months, Gabby has made great progress towards her goals, building relationships, learning important life skills, and taking on the new challenge of work experience.

Now that she has had a taste of working life she is looking forward to one day transitioning into paid employment so she can realise her dreams of living more independently and having a family of her own.

“Our hope for Gabby in the future is to reach her potential and find a job where she can blossom and use all her qualities”, said Gabby’s mum Karine.
