News & Stories

Beach lover Lachie was still in high school when he decided to pursue a career in the care industry, but it wasn’t until 2021 that he decided to pack his bags, leave sunny Bowen behind, and start his new journey with HELP.

Tell us a little about your background

I am originally from a small town up in the Whitsundays called Bowen, but moved to Brisbane in 2021 with two close friends. I began working in the disability sector in 2017, studying a Certificate III in Individual Support through a traineeship at high school. This led to a full-time career after high school, where I was co-coordinating a social group as well as individual support work. I decided to move to Brisbane as I wanted a lifestyle change from Bowen, and wanted new experiences in all aspects of my life.

What led you to join the HELP team?

During my move to Brisbane, I wanted to continue working in the disability sector, but also wanted a change from support work. I came across the Inclusive Employment Supports job online, which I thought was a good opportunity for me based on my past experience. After I applied, it was a quick process. My now manager contacted me and we organised an interview, and within a month I moved to Brisbane and was starting my induction at HELP’s head office in Eagle Farm.

What are you most passionate about? What inspires you?

My passions are the beach, art, nature, travel, friends and family. I am inspired by many things; however, I am mostly inspired by the positive people in my life.

On the weekend you’ll find me…

You will usually catch me exploring and adventuring around South East Queensland, at the beach, or with my friends around Brisbane!

What’s the best part of the job?

The best parts of my job are helping people achieve their goals, and watching participants grow and become the person they want to be!

What’s your favourite HELP memory?

My favourite memory would be the 2021 IES Christmas Party – this day was full of great activities, and it gave me a great opportunity to meet other coaches and other participants. As an IES Coach you often work autonomously, so it’s always great when you get to see the team! Another favourite memory, was when a participant I work with was successful in gaining work experience in a career they are interested in, after being knocked back by quite a few businesses – was a very cheerful and happy day!

What are your plans for the future? What are you most looking forward to?

Professionally, I would like to study further and progress my career. Personally, I would love to travel more internationally, and focus on growing my life in Brisbane!

3 fun facts about me

1. I have a golden retriever named Stella, whose date of birth is tattooed on my leg.

2. I am petrified of snakes.

3. I am addicted to eggs benny and coffee.

If you could invite any three people to dinner living or dead who would they be?

My grandad, nana and mum!

What’s your secret talent?

If I told you, it wouldn’t be a secret.

Favourite place in the world?

I would have to say Tauranga, New Zealand. I travelled to New Zealand 3 years ago and fell in love with it. I was going to go back and explore further, but then the pandemic hit. My next travel plans are Europe and Hawaii!
