From supported employment to pickleball and independent living, Suzi’s story shows how one door can open many paths to confidence, connection, and independence.

Suzi likes playing pickleball in her community, but going alone was a little intimidating. She wasn’t always comfortable asking questions and didn’t know many of the other players.

That’s where Chelsea, a support worker from Help, stepped in. For the past few months, Suzi and Chelsea have been attending sessions together – and Suzi says it’s made a big difference.

“I feel more comfortable knowing Chelsea is with me. I’ve gotten better at my game, and she helps me understand certain instructions if I’m unsure,” says Suzi. “I like playing with someone who understands me.”

For Chelsea, the feeling is mutual. “I’ve learned a whole new sport myself, and it’s incredibly rewarding to watch Suzi’s progress since we started the sessions,” she shares.

Suzi first connected with Help through supported employment in our Nursery team in 2020. As her confidence grew, so did her goals – and she added one-on-one community supports to her week to take part in the activities she enjoys.

Because with the right support, accessing the community becomes less daunting and more about growth: confidence, independence, and the freedom to experience life on your own terms. It’s all part of Help’s One Door to Open Many approach, whether you’re starting out or ready to explore something new.

Community supports starts at home

Suzi and Chelsea’s sessions begin with a home pick-up before heading to the pickleball court. After warming up and listening to the coach’s instructions, they run through what’s expected for the day – then Suzi’s ready to hit the court.

“Suzi has progressed really well. She now consistently plays on court 1, which is the highest-ranked court in pickleball. The coach says she’s improved immensely, and I’ve seen it too,” says Chelsea.

A new chapter ahead

Suzi’s progress doesn’t stop at pickleball. As her confidence has grown, she’s now preparing to take the next step towards independent living – this time with the right support.

Having lived out of home before, Suzi is now ready to enhance that experience with added support from Help. While she searches for a long-term place that suits her lifestyle, Suzi’s moving into one of Help’s Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes, where she can receive the tailored support she needs during this transition.

Her long-term goal is to share a home with a housemate and receive occasional support with day-to-day tasks like cooking, cleaning, and general household maintenance.

Nate Dunne, Head of Disability at Help, says Suzi’s journey is a great example of how Help’s personalised approach can open up new possibilities. “There’s no one-size-fits-all service at Help,” he says. “We take the time to understand each person’s needs and goals to support their choices.

In Suzi’s case, that meant starting with supported employment, gradually adding community supports, and now providing the right support for independent living – helping her build confidence and independence in all aspects of her daily life.”
